Mornington BESS, located in Tyabb on the Mornington Peninsula, is a 240 MW / 480 MWh Battery Energy Storage System developed by Valent Energy. It connects to the Tyabb Terminal Station through AusNet Services infrastructure and will store renewable energy to power ≈ 40,000 homes. DIS Fire Systems was engaged by ACLE to deliver the sitewide fire detection, alarm and warning system integration for this landmark renewable-energy facility

The Challenge

Complying with complex multi agency requirements for Victoria’s largest BESS project.

The Mornington project required close alignment with CFA Guidelines for Renewable Energy Facilities and AS1851 maintenance expectations, while coordinating with AusNet, FRI Response consultants, and Valent Energy’s design team. DIS Fire Systems developed custom fire matrix programming and performed commissioning tests to satisfy both planning permit conditions (PA2001067) and CFA’s BESS safety requirements. The team overcame supply and lead-time challenges by integrating off-site pre-testing and weekly QA reviews to ensure on-time delivery and regulatory sign-off

Comprehensive System Integration

Seamlessly integrates fire suppression systems with BESS control networks for real-time monitoring, automated activation, and superior fire protection performance.

Regulatory & Standards Compliance

Compliant with AS ISO 14520 and NFPA 855 standards, ensuring all fire suppression systems meet rigorous safety, environmental, and operational requirements.

Detection & Monitoring

Equipped with intelligent, multi-sensor detection systems to identify smoke, heat, or gas within seconds, enabling rapid and automated fire suppression response.

Our Approach

Comprehensive programming and commissioning of networked fire systems

DIS Fire Systems supplied and installed Advanced FIPs across the switchroom and O&M facilities, establishing full network communication with individual BESS panels. All systems were programmed to AS1670.1 standards, with fire matrix testing performed to verify cause-and-effect logic across containerised battery units. Inspection Test Plans (ITPs) and Inspection Test Records (ITRs) were developed for each commissioning phase to ensure traceability and client acceptance.

Clean Agent Suppression Technology

Our clean agent suppression systems eliminate fires quickly using residue-free, electrically non-conductive agents that protect valuable equipment without water damage.

The Result

Commissioned and certified for operation under CFA and AusNet compliance

The Mornington site achieved full CFA alignment and passed all fire-alarm commissioning tests. DIS Fire Systems’ programming enabled fast alarm propagation and coordinated warning responses across the site’s multiple BESS subsystems. This project established a benchmark for BESS fire-protection integration in Victoria.

Comprehensive System Integration

Seamlessly integrates fire suppression systems with BESS control networks for real-time monitoring, automated activation, and superior fire protection performance.
